Building websites that work for my clients gives me a great sense of pride as a web designer/developer! I enjoy seeing that the work I have done is actually HELPING my clients. By focusing on their goals and providing them with websites that work for them, we can achieve great results!
Below is an actual screen shot of a google analytics results page for one of my clients.
Yeah, that’s awesome! Proof of websites that work!
Web Designer or Thief, Which are you??
There are too many people in this world that think being a professional website designer is just slapping some pretty graphics on a page! They get all excited when they add that extra gradient or awesome new flash* animation to a website…
YAY, for you Mr. Designer! But what are you really giving your clients?
*Note from theR3AP3R: Only use Flash if it is 100% necessary for the website!
- What is the website accomplishing?
- Are you doing anything to market the website?
- Are you tracking the traffic?
- Do you know what visitors are doing on the site?
- What are they clicking?
- What is working on the site?
- What isn’t working?
- How do you know you’ve built websites that work?
If you can’t answer any of these questions (for yourself or your client) then you are basically just robbing people of their money when they get a website from you!
Yeah, I said it! ROBBING PEOPLE!
What Is Your Purpose?
Every website should have a goal and a purpose. As a website designer, you should have a clear strategy and understanding of what your client hopes to gain by having a website.
Sure, everyone loves a pretty picture but once visitors get past the initial “Ooooh, cool looking site!”, what are they doing?
You need to keep in mind that the website needs to more than a portfolio piece for you! It needs to get your client leads/sales!
“Mr. R3AP3R, how do I make myself a better website designer/developer?”, you ask.
“Are there any books, magazines, articles or blogs I can read?”, you ask.
“I wish there was someone out there who could teach me how to do all the wonderful things you described.”, you shout!
Read articles, blogs and whatever else you can on the subjects of designing with a purpose, search engine optimization and conversion optimization.
Some great books to get you started:
Convert!: Designing Web Sites to Increase Traffic and Conversion by Ben Hunt
Learn from everyone out there!
Speaking of Ben Hunt and websites that work…
One of the best investments I have EVER made was taking Ben’s “Pro Web Design Course“.
Yeah, I know you think you know how to be a great designer… so did I before I met Ben. The lessons I have learned about, search engine optimization, conversion rates and overall web marketing have made my life (and job) easier!
[sws_blockquote align=”” alignment=”none” cite=”From: Happy Client” quotestyles=”style05″] So basically in two weeks, we’ve had more views than the past 2 years.
I heart you guys, thanks so much! [/sws_blockquote]
My clients are beyond thrilled with the new heights their websites are reaching and the increased amounts of traffic and money they are making!
Any fool can slap some pretty shapes together, put them on the internet and make some money doing it. But they will always be chasing the next check because their clients will never see the benefits of the websites they create.
Take the time to learn from the best and make the internet a better place for everyone… and get paid while you’re doing it!
